Lacuna Developments, based in Holywood has teamed up with Welsh firm Watkin Jones in a joint project to develop approximately 150 apartments in south Belfast.
So far, the two have bought the former Willis Insurance offices near Botanic Avenue, the former Belfast Metropolitan College and the former Athletic Stores building in the town centre. The latter student development is the first private sector project that will be close to Queens University.
Their latest application is for development on Donegall Street for more than 700 units and will be a part of the larger Northside redevelopment project that includes commercial space, a hotel and social housing. The accommodation for students will be located close to the newest campus of Ulster University on the northern edge of the city centre. The project is to be completed by September 2017 and is an investment of around £10m. Fresh Student Living will be managing the project, as well as the others.
As many as 4,000 student 'beds' are planned to be developed over the coming years in and around Belfast's city centre.
