Selly Park Birmingham student housing plans put on ice

Posted by Ross Jones-Morris in ,

Plans to transform the historic Beechenhurst House on Serpentine Road in Birmingham into student accommodation has been halted in the planning process on conservation and heritage concerns.

According to an article by the Birmingham Post, it is alleged that residents had complained the students would swap the quiet road, which is otherwise filled with detached family houses.

Concerns are compounded by the view that the area of Selly Oak has been inundated with student development already, and that the area does not need any more accommodation. A spokesman on behalf of the developer Five Oaks Green highlighted the planned development is a "high-quality student complex, comparable with a boutique hotel".

The planning application will first be looked at by the city's conservation and heritage panel before it returns to the planning committee for final approval.
