A 1970s block of student flats, described as "iconic" by some, were given the green light to be demolished by Newcastle City Council on Friday, 18th December 2015.
The block of Newcastle University student accommodation, situated on Richardson Road, housed students for over four decades. It's demolition is to be followed by a multi-million pound plan to build six 10-storey blocks of modern student flats, suitable to house 1,300 students.
Demolition work is scheduled to begin in June 2016, with the new accommodation build taking place in two phases, with a view to project completion in 2019.
Newcastle University was first established in 1834 as the "School of Medicine and Surgery", and is now a member of the Russell Group and home to over 22,000 students in the academic year 2013/14, according to public HESA data.
