South Lanarkshire Council's planning committee have given CVO Ltd the green light to build a two-storey mixed development in East Kilbride, just south of Glasgow.
The plans concern a vacant site near the city's St James Retail Centre, and involve the construction of eight retail units on the ground floor of the building and 29 student flats on the upper floor. It will also include space for parking.
All flats are one-beds with access to communal areas, laundry facilities and a gym.
The land was initially zoned for industrial use and is set in an industrial area, so normally a student development would have been hard to get approval for. However, as officers outlined when recommending the plans for approval, the site was somewhat of a special case - Â“given that the site has remained undeveloped despite being designated for employment uses for an extensive time period, there would not be any adverse impact on the industrial land supply in this case. Additionally, it is not considered that the proposed development would have any adverse impact on the vitality or viability of existing town or village centres."
