Newcastle University to Be Awarded Royal Honour

Newcastle University is set to receive a special honour as part of the Queen's 90th birthday celebrations. The university is just one of 12 that have been chosen to receive a new Regius Professorship.

Newcastle was signalled out for its recognition of exceptionally high quality research and in particular for its world leading research into ageing.

The Regius Professorship in Ageing will be attributed to either a professor already based at the university or to someone newly appointed to its Institute of Ageing, which focuses on the challenges and opportunities arising from an ageing population.

The work being done by the university has also led to it being picked as the location of a new £40m National Centre for Ageing Science and Innovation, which will help to further elevate its status.

Other universities that have been awarded this prestigious award span a range of subjects, from a professorship in chemistry for Cardiff University to one in mathematics for the University of Oxford.
