The contract to convert four existing buildings located at Fitzalan Court on Newport Road has been awarded to Midas Construction and will see the site converted into halls of residence.

The student accommodation block that can house 355 students will officially open in September 2017, and will include a two-storey roof extension as well as a new courtyard area. There are also plans to re-model a basement car park, which will help to provide additional space for facilities and parking.

The Fitzalan scheme represents a joint venture between McLaren Group and the developers PMG. Midas Construction is also working with other companies in the area as part of the project, which will reinforce the company's commitment to employing local sub-contractors where possible.

According to Derek Quinn, executive director at Midas Construction the project represents "another significant project for the Group in the city" following on from the company's £12m student accommodation project that they are currently delivering in Cardiff's Oxford Street.

Other members of the team include Cardiff based quantity surveyors Chandler KBS, Holder Mathias Architects Ltd and structural engineers Shear Design ltd.
