Councillors have voted in favour of a planned 23-storey student housing development in Portsmouth, that will be able to accommodate nearly 600 students.

The halls, which are yet to be named, will be built on Surrey Road in Portsmouth's city centre.

The student accommodation block is being proposed by Crown Student Living and will consist of 576 bedrooms, including 202 one-bedroom studios and 187 two-bedroom studios.

Located between the Avalon House apartment block and Portsmouth and Southsea train station, the development will also come equipped with a gym, lounge area, cycle storage and a small cinema.

Councillor Luke Stubbs has praised the increasing development in the city centre, due to the relieving of pressure for housing in other areas of Portsmouth.

Planning officers had concluded that the proposals would add vitality to the city centre and support its wider regeneration. It was also commented that the proposal demonstrated enough high-quality design, and architecture that was sympathetic to the setting of the listed railway station opposite.

However, this was not a view shared by all with the Design Review Panel criticising the development for being poorly proportioned and excessively bulky.
