Councillors in Kirklees have approved plans to build a 10-storey student housing block at the Waterfront Quarter close to Kirklees College.

The development will be situated on the vacant site between Manchester Road and Huddersfield Narrow Canal and between the college building and Earnshaws motorcycle showroom.

According to council officers the provision of student accommodation would be appropriate, due to its location to other student accommodation currently under construction, as well as its proximity to the town centre, college and university campuses.

The plans will also involve the contribution of £233,000 towards developing those aspects that are open to the public - such as seating, public art, footpaths and the canal towpath.

The plans consist of 168 self-contained student studio bedrooms with each unit coming equipped with a lounge, kitchen, bedroom and a bathroom. The accommodation block will also include a communal lounge, TV area and a gym.

A council officers' report provided to the committee indicated that the 10-storey building would appear to be seven in height when being viewed from the road and therefore would not be over-dominant for those residents in houses on Bankfield Road. The report continued, suggesting that there were no adverse impacts that would outweigh the benefits of the scheme.
