A major development project has been given the go ahead on Percy's Lane in York.

Under the plans an industrial unit will be replaced with a modern building that will provide enough housing for 106 students.

The development will consist of a mix of one, three, five and six bedroom en-suite apartments and townhouses and will be developed by York based S Harrison.

Work will begin on the site in the summer of 2017 and is expected to be complete in time for the start the 2018/19 academic year.

Chris Hale from S Harrison said of the development: "We're delighted to secure planning permission for the student apartments. In recent years there has been a lot of development on Percy's Lane, and this site is one of the last pieces of the jigsaw, so the new building has been specifically designed to enhance the local streetscape and complement its surroundings."

With both the University of York and York St John University having grown at a rapid pace in recent years, it's expected that the additional purpose-built student accommodation will reduce the demand for York's housing stock.
