Loughborough University has revealed plans for new 600-bed student accommodation based on campus.
According to the proposal around £40m would be invested in the project, creating sport-specific accommodation to secure Loughborough's place as a training centre for elite athletes.
The development would also see the construction of new student accommodation to help meet the demand from new and returning students for places in halls of residence. According to the university current residences are operating at full capacity as a result of existing student numbers, therefore they are unable to accommodate all those who would wish to attend.
Subject to planning approval, the new accommodation will be located on a site adjacent to the existing High Performance Athletics Centre on the Ashby Road site of the campus.
The plans call for an additional 600 beds, including up to 70 student athlete rooms and 40 elite athlete rooms.
A university spokesman said of the plans: "The rooms will have a similar design to existing accommodation on campus. Some will be specifically designed for elite athlete short term accommodation, including those with disabilities."
The student rooms will consist of a mix of both en-suite rooms and cluster flats that will have shared kitchen facilities.
If approved the project will start in August 2017, with an expected completion date of September 2019.
