A former nursing home in Gwynedd could be transformed into student housing after plans were submitted by Bangor-based Bellevue Student Ltd to develop the building.

The Bryn Llifon residential home located on Meririon Road in Bangor closed in September last year following staffing issues. Plans have now been submitted to develop the site into student accommodation with space for 31 bedrooms.

Included within the plans are communal facilities, a bicycle storage area and bin and recycling areas.

The plot is situated close to Bangor's city centre and the main university campus.

Developers argued that without continued use the building was at risk of rapid deterioration due to its age and type and there had been limited interest in the site with no firm offers received.

Agents Owen Devenport Ltd said of the development: "The proposal is in effect a change of use of the building to provide student accommodation, which would secure the long-term future of the building by ensuring its active use and providing an on-going return that would be sufficient to finance the buildings' future maintenance."

They also argued: "The proposal would also achieve benefits for the local community though the provision of much needed purpose-built student housing, which would ease pressure on the local housing stock and market."

The plans have been backed by Bangor County Councillor Gwynfor Edwards.
