Progress is being made to create 575 student flats in Newcastle with the demolition of Newgate Shipping Centre.

Since May this year contractors have been knocking down the 1960's shopping centre so it can be replaced with purpose-built student accommodation, a hotel and 20,000 square feet of retail space.

Once complete Unite will take control of the student accommodation, which is due for completion by September 2018.

Developers McAleer and Rushe were appointed to deliver the scheme with Mark Diamond saying: "With demolition work on the site nearly finished, the scheme is on track for construction work to begin early in the new year, ahead of the completion of the entire redevelopment in late 2018."

The shopping centre had previously been described as an eyesore and was once home to a boutique owned by Newcastle United's Malcolm Macdonald.

The £100 million investment is expected to create 153 full-time jobs according to developers McAlee and Rushe.
