Plans to build a major new student accommodation development in Lancaster have been given the go ahead.

Lancaster City Council's planning committee has approved an application submitted by Hines UK to redevelop the Lawson's Quay site between Bulk Road and Caton Road situated to the north of the city centre.

Designed by Stride Treglown, the development will consist of eight buildings, up to 11 storeys tall, arranged around a series of linked courtyard spaces. In total, there will be 321 en-suite, 185 shared and 125 studio rooms across the development.

Prior to the committee meeting, a planning officer's report had recommended the project for approval.

It said: "The site has been the subject of a number of repeated attempts to bring forward development, however unfortunately these have never materialised. Officers consider this application is deliverable and could finally realise the development of this site. The proposal has been the subject of extensive consultation – with officers, the public and consultees – and this has helped to inform the design of the proposal".

The report continued, suggesting the contribution the scheme could bring in regenerating this city centre site is a significant consideration.

Developers are expected on the site in the spring of 2017 with the accommodation ready in time for the 2018-19 academic year.
