A substantial block of student accommodation in Plymouth will be adorned with a sail like metal clad, to reflect the city's nautical history.

The two blocks of student housing on Notte Street are set to welcome their first intake of students this year as construction reaches the halfway point.

When complete, the first building will consist of 13 storeys, with the second standing 10 storeys high.

In an attempt to make the accommodation stand out, the second block will have a nautical feel, with a 'sail like metal clad' having been designed for Block B.

The accommodation will sit behind the Reel Cinema and Plymouth Athenaeum on a former derelict piece of land.

The project was given the green light more than two years ago, despite a number of concerns being raised during the application process. In particular, English Heritage objected to the application, suggesting it was too big in relation to the Grade 2 listed Crescent.

Pickstock Construction is working as the main contractor for the project, while Mears Student Life will look after operations once the accommodation is up and running.

The first block will have a total of 304 student rooms, split between a mix of studios and cluster flats and will be built using a modular design. The second of the blocks will feature 60 student beds and will be constructed using traditional methods.
