A former nursing home in Bangor is being earmarked for student housing.

Plans have been put forward by Bellevue Student Ltd, to transform the Bryn Llifon residential home into student accommodation with 31 bedrooms.

Situated on Meirion Road, the former nursing home was run by the Baptist Union of Wales, but closed its doors in February 2015.

Included in the plans will be a communal living room, dining room and kitchen and each bedroom will come equipped with an en-suite.

The site is located around 250 metres from Bangor University's main building in Upper Bangor.

The plans haven't appealed to councillors, with Bangor City Council objecting to the plans saying it is an "over development of the site".

They also argued that similar facilities already exist in the area and the new development would generate more traffic, noise and disturbance for residents.

Despite the concerns senior planner Gareth Jones has recommended the plans be approved.

Mr Jones highlighted that the university has 9,311 full-time students and just 2,943 bed spaces. Including the proposed application, 1,160 private student accommodation bed spaces are available, have received planning permission or are under consideration.

He added: "It also appears that there is shift in the type of accommodation that students are seeking, and there is an increased demand for purpose-built accommodation."

The planning application is set to be discussed at next weeks committee meeting.
