Plans have been submitted to Guildford Borough Council for permission to develop a new student accommodation block for more than 550 students.

Montagu Evans has been instructed by Stone Grove Stoke Park Limited to apply for planning permission on the brownfield site located next to Guildford College.

The development aims to relieve future pressure on the housing market, with the University of Surrey predicting growth in student numbers of 3,300 over the next 10 years.

The design and access student statement, submitted as part of the application said: "Guildford is fortunate to contain a wide variety of further and higher education institutions. Their collective success has seen all grow significantly over time with intakes anticipated to increase steadily over the coming decade.

"The University of Surrey, for instance, predicts an additional 3,300 students in the next 10 years and 6,300 to 2033."

Meanwhile, a University of Surrey spokesperson suggested Guildford is short of all housing types. As a result, the university welcomes any development of quality student housing, which will complement the major investment the university is making on its own campus.
