Crosslane Student Developments has received backing for its 117-bed student accommodation scheme on Woodhouse Square in Leeds.

The development represents the first for Crosslane in Leeds, but its second in Yorkshire. The scheme follows the company's 437-bed purpose-built student accommodation block in Sheffield, which is due for completion before the start of the 2017 academic year.

The planning application for the Leeds development was backed by authorities despite concerns from members of the public. The meeting of Leeds City Council's Plans Panel heard that the student accommodation would mark a significant investment and the first of its kind in Leeds.

Councillors decided in favour of the application, but concerns were raised by local residents over the potential noise impact on the nearby residential community.

Commenting on the application Headingly Councillor Al Garthwaite said: "If this was a care home I would have no concerns. Students want to live in the city centre and a lot have left Hyde Park and Headingley and houses have gone to graduates and smaller shares which is great.

"What I would not like to see is this residential area becoming the next student area. I don't think it is suitable and would be a great shame."

The Leeds development is due to open in September 2018 and will be managed by Prime Student Living.
