Work has begun on a student accommodation development in Leeds, which will provide 180 en-suite bedrooms once complete.

S Harrison, the York-based property development company, has started work on the project situated close to the Leeds city centres main university campuses.

Under the plans the existing office block will be demolished to make way for a seven-storey building able to accommodate 180 students split across 29 cluster apartments.

Each apartment will come equipped with a large shared kitchen as well as living and dining spaces.

The building itself will also have communal facilities including a study room, games area, common room and courtyard.

Located on Blenheim Walk between Leeds College of Art and Leeds Student Medical Practice, the development will be undertaken by lead contractor GMI Construction Group Plc.

Commenting on the development, Steve McManaman from S Harrison, said: "This promises to be an exceptional and sought after development at the heart of the city's university district and within easy walking distance of Leeds city centre, so we're delighted that work is underway.

"GMI is a highly reputable Leeds company with excellent local knowledge and a strong track record on large scale projects, which made them the ideal contractor to work with on this development.

"Work clearing the site is due to complete this month and construction work will then start immediately with the scheme due to complete in time for the start of the 2018/19 academic year."
