Construction has started on a 19-storey student development in Portsmouth.

The Co-op bank and surrounding site are being demolished to make way for the £30m scheme on the corner of Stanhope Road and Commercial Road.

Once complete, the tower will consist of 138 studio apartments and 118 en-suite cluster flats.

The development will also come equipped with study hubs, a games room, and kitchen and dinner room facilities.

The development will retain its original name of Stanhope House and is being constructed by Crosslane Student Developments.

Commenting on the construction, Lisa Timberlake, development manager at Crosslane, said: "We are pleased to commence work on the current site and construction of the new Stanhope House, our first development in Portsmouth, helping to meet the strong growth in demand for this type of student accommodation in the city."

The scheme is due to be delivered in August 2019, in time for the start of the new academic year.
