A landmark pub in Swansea is to be turned into student flats despite concerns it is situated at a dangerous junction.

Work to develop The Cricketers into 15 flats and studios for 45 students could begin next April after Swansea's planning committee backed the scheme.

Swansea's planning committee recommended the scheme for approval despite councillors arguing the area was already heavily populated. Uplands councillor Nick Davies said it would be good to bring the pub back into use, but it was "the wrong scheme in the wrong place."

Fellow councillor Irene Mann suggested there were 165 empty rooms in houses of multiple occupation, adding: "There does seem evidence there is no immediate or long-term need for this type of accommodation."

Although it was also recognised the proposed development sat on a junction, it was felt that putting student accommodation there wouldn't add to the danger. Planning officers also dismissed the idea of restricting occupiers from having cars as it was deemed to be unenforceable.
