Portsmouth City Council have approved plans to turn a run-down eight-storey building into purpose-built student accommodation.

The building is currently not being used to its full potential with just a few offices on the lower floors and shops on the ground floor. Under the plans, the development will transform Venture Tower into a 97-bed block of student accommodation.

Councillors welcomed the proposals, suggesting the development could have a big impact on the local economy and vitality of the Fratton shopping area.

During the application process there were some concerns that the use of a roof terrace late into the night could cause noise pollution for nearby residents, however overall the scheme was supported.

The new student accommodation will consist of a mix of studio and twin rooms and will come equipped with a gym, laundry facilities, bike storage and roof terrace.
