Student Developments Driving Out Coventry's Businesses
20th Jul 2018
Plans to build The University Academy '92 (UA92), which is backed by former players Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Gary and Phil Neville and Paul Scholes, have taken a step forward with Trafford Council looking to offer support in the form of student accommodation.
Trafford Council has earmarked a vacant office block on Chester Road to redevelop into student flats, which will help support the wider UA92 university development. The university will be developed around the former Kellogg's site on Brian Statham Way, opposite the Old Trafford Cricket Ground.
Trafford Council is now looking to bring forward the development site and is already in discussions with a preferred delivery partner.
Under the plans, the existing building will be retained but converted into a block of 140 student beds, while a neighbouring plot could also provide further student housing.
A planning application for the first phase is expected to be submitted in the coming months as the accommodation would need to be in place to welcome the university's first students in September 2019.
The proposed site falls within the wider Stretford masterplan, which was signed off earlier this year. UA92 will represent a branch of Lancaster University and is being delivered in partnership with Bruntwood, Trafford College, and Microsoft.
