Unite Students has submitted plans to develop a huge student accommodation scheme in Leeds, which will rise to 27 storeys, becoming one of the largest buildings in the city.

A formal planning application has been lodged with Leeds City Council for the redevelopment of the Podium Buildings situated on Merrion Way.

The proposed development site is situated adjacent to the First Direct Arena, the Arena Point tower and Yorkshire Bank's headquarters.

Student specialists Unite agreed to buy the property for £10.5m in November 2017 and plans to demolish the existing casino and pub to make way for the development.

The plans call for the construction of two towers, one 15 storeys tall and the other 27 storeys, which will consist of a total of 1,020 student flats.

More than 10,500 sq ft of commercial space will also be created as part of the scheme, which is expected to cost in the region of £80m.

It's hoped the new student accommodation will help alleviate the pressure on the city's housing stock and improve the visual appearance of the site.

If all goes to plan the scheme is due to open in time for the 2020-21 academic year.
