Plans to build a huge block of student flats in Coventry have been granted approval.

Under the plans the Buildbase building supplies centre will be flattened to make way for a 462-bed student development.

The scheme will result in a six to eight-storey development, equipped with shared study areas, common room, gym, staff management suite and laundry facilities.

The student bedrooms will comprise a mix of studio rooms and cluster flats, with ten rooms being identified to allow for easy adaptation to meet accessible requirements by future residents.

The building has been designed around four landscaped courtyards, which will provide attractive spaces for students and staff as well as enhancing the street scene.

The application was submitted by Gilltown Ltd, who say the accommodation will be managed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The area surrounding Gulson Road is already dominated by Coventry University buildings, including the engineering and computing building, library and multi-storey staff car park.
