A 425-bed scheme in Preston consisting entirely of self-contained studios has been granted planning consent.

Named the Urban Hub, the Pillars Holdings scheme has been designed by David Cox Architects.

The development is located in Moor Lane, which links the UCLan campus to the A6, at the junction with Ashmoor Street. Under the plans the scheme will feature a gym, prayer room, library, roof terraces and retail units.

A report submitted by Preston City Council's planning officers said: "The scale and design of the development would be striking and visually prominent but has been sensitively designed to integrate into the urban street scene and would positively contribute to the character and appearance of the area."

Meanwhile, the architects behind the project said the design for the external spaces references a project undertaken by a group of post-graduate UCLan students, led by the graphic design professor Ben Casey.

David Cox Architects have also worked on significant projects including The Tramshed and Canterbury Hall in Preston, along with additional schemes in Loughborough and Stoke-on-Trent.
