Work is due to start next month on a huge student accommodation development near Coventry city centre.

Under the proposals, developer Gilltown will demolish the existing Buildbase building supplies centre on Gulson Road, replacing it with accommodation for up to 462 students.

The demolition of the existing structures is almost complete, allowing for building work to get underway.

Once constructed, the scheme will be six to eight-storeys high and will include amenities such as shared study areas, a gym, common room, staff management suite and laundry facilities. The accommodation will also feature courtyards, disabled parking spaces, cycle spaces and a drop off and collection point.

Commenting on the build, Paul Gillespie, of Gilltown, said: "We could see huge potential in this site when it was introduced to us as there is a definite demand for more student accommodation in Coventry."

"This is a great location for Coventry University students and creating high-quality student property is exactly what we do."

The student bedrooms will comprise of a mix of studios, as well as cluster flats, some featuring ensuites and others sharing bathroom facilities to provide a more affordable option.

Gilltown hope to have the development ready in time for the 2020-21 academic year.
