Charnwood Borough Council has recommended plans from Future Generation for a 3-storey terrace block, a 4-5 storey block, two 5 storey blocks and a linked 6 and 7 storey block for approval. In total, the new plans will provide 440 student beds.

The initial plans submitted in July, for 7-8 storey buildings and a 12 storey tower were rejected. This plan would have also provided a rooftop football pitch and 612 student flats.

A council document released ahead of the decision on the scheme reads: "The site has lain vacant for 20 years and is in need of regeneration. It is considered that its development with this proposal would make a significant, positive contribution to the town. It would set a high benchmark against which other future development in the town would have to be assessed."

If the scheme goes ahead it will create 200 construction jobs and 20 jobs once the buildings are in use.
