Trinity College Dublin Students' Union (TCDSU) has voted against adopting a stance that would see it support rent strikes by student activists.

The union voted against a motion that would have mandated it to promote and participate in Cut The Rent's efforts, as well as support students in case of disciplinary action.

The activist group Cut The Rent is proposing students withhold rent payments in January, with member Xavier Bradley, saying: "We view that the current situation of accommodation has become prohibitively expensive and exclusive."

"The college has the capacity to rent lower than the market rent price."

TCDSU objected to the motion, suggesting that by offering its support, students could be placed in danger that they might not be aware of.

Cut the Rent was established in response to the increasing cost of student accommodation, with reports over the summer that every college in the country had raised their prices.
