Reports suggest a new application has been submitted that could result in 260 student bedrooms being built in Guildford.

The Quadrant scheme would also lead to the construction of retail units and leisure space, with a rooftop bar and restaurant overlooking the River Wey and Guildford Cathedral.

The owner Michel Harper withdrew previous plans but has submitted a new application after listening to evidence from Guildford Borough Council.

Mr Harper said: "I have been trying to comprehensively develop the site and have done five public inquiries over the past 15 years, one of which incorporated a hotel including Bedford Road car park."

"We have done a number of designs and people can comment on the ones they like and give any views they have. We want to retain an element of leisure, and are proposing student accommodation."

"We see a need for student accommodation and Knight Frank (estate agents) says Guildford is short of 5,000 units. The Academy of Contemporary Music will take all of the units we build here."

"The ACM has a requirement for 600 units, and they are directly opposite us so that is very convenient for them."

"We're proposing to widen the pavements to three metres to make the crossing safer."
