Plans have been submitted to build a four-storey block of student accommodation in Derby, containing a total of 59 bedrooms.

The scheme has been earmarked for a brownfield site between Slack Lane, Etwall Street and the junction of Uttoxeter Old Road.

Documents submitted as part of the planning application said the development "seeks to address the growing need for purpose-built student accommodation, whilst not detracting from family homes."

The design and access statement added: "The final proposals are the result of a detailed design process that responds to the context and pre-application advice. The application seeks to develop an existing brownfield site, which is currently vacant and is located within a highly sustainable urban location. The size and nature of the proposed development helps to meet a growing need and will establish a feature on the corner of a main road that is currently under-utilised."

The applicant has also argued that the residence will enhance the appearance of the existing site.
