After developer SC Pelham requested changes to be made on their original planning application for the former Lectern pub site, community campaigners decided to take a stand.

Community members in the Coombe Road area of Brighton were left frustrated when community space on the site was reduced from a cafe and meeting space to a small room. This was largely due to the lack of other community space in the area and the Lectern pub previously being declared an "asset of community value" in January 2016.

The old pub was set to be converted into a nine storey block of student flats.

In an attempt to encourage people to comment on the application, the Coombe Road Area Local Area Team (CRALAT) held public meetings.

Campaigners have succeeded and there will be more community space on the site.
