Students Unhappy Over Rent Refunds
26th Jan 2021
The University of Glasgow has announced that it will offer a one-month rent refund to all students living in its accommodation regardless of whether they have been told to self-isolate or not.
The university acknowledged the difficult circumstances students face following an outbreak of Covid-19. In addition to the rent refund, the University of Glasgow will provide £50 in cash to each student, which they have been encouraged to spend on food deliveries from local restaurants and food outlets.
In recent days universities and government have faced criticism for encouraging students to travel to university despite a sharp rise in Covid-19 cases. At the weekend, Labour urged the government to delay the start of some university terms until mass testing is available on campuses.
With universities taking a proactive approach, no doubt private purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) providers will face pressure to do the same if localised outbreaks occur.
