Student Beds to Replace Residential Flats

Glencairn Properties have submitted a planning application to change a development site in Lower Gilmore Place into a block of student accommodation.

The company was granted permission to build a four-storey block of residential flats on the site in July last year after appealing against the council's refusal of the proposals. However, the developer has seemingly changed its mind and now wants to provide accommodation for 74 students instead.

Locals have protested the move, arguing there is already an over-supply of student accommodation in the area and that the primary need is for new residential housing.

Despite 83 objections being lodged, the plans have still been recommended for approval.

Responded to the concerns raised, managing director Daryl Teague suggested that the previous plans were not financially viable and the newly proposed scheme is smaller in scale.
