A historic pub in York looks set to be transformed into student accommodation.

The Castle Howard Ox on Townend Street in The Groves is due to be extended and transformed into 17 student apartments.

Although the pub has a long history, it has been vacant for some time. Under the plans submitted by Alfa Homes, the accommodation will come with a shared garden and communal lounge on the ground floor.

The scheme will consist entirely of studio flats, which have been designed to suit modern needs.

According to documents submitted as part of the application, the development is less than a two-minute walk from the York St John University and is supported by communal space at The Coal Yard development on Mansfield street. The site also benefits from excellent transport links.
