The University of York is offering its students accommodation in Hull due to a shortage of available accommodation.

An over-subscription on the university's courses has created a surge in demand for student housing that cannot be met. The university was forced to email a number of students telling them there were no available rooms across the city of York, either on or off campus.

Those students who have been offered accommodation in Hull, 40 miles away, have been given a 10% reduction in rent.

Whilst those students who put York as their firm choice are guaranteed accommodation in the city, those who secured their place through clearing have been left scrambling to find accommodation.

According to the university, there has been unprecedented demand for university-provided accommodation. The institution is expected the current situation to be temporary, with new purpose-built accommodation on campus in York set to open from January next year.
