The university has a student population of around 13,500 people, of which 22% make up the international community coming from over 110 different countries. It has two main campuses, the first being just a 5 minute walk from the heart of the city, and the second is a 10 minute bus ride. The city itself is renowned for being one of the least expensive cities in the UK and is just a stones throw from the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The institution was the first UK university to found a Department of Peace Studies in 1973. It has since gone on to develop an excellent international reputation and currently stands as the world's largest department for the study of peace and conflict.
