At the Opening of a New Student Block Carlisle Looks to the Future

At the official opening of the new U-Nest accommodation block in Carlisle the vice-chancellor of the University of Cumbria has outlined his hopes for the future of the university.

Professor Peter Strike will step down from his position in the summer but took the opportunity to urge the university to grow after he steps down in order to take advantage of the Moorside nuclear project in the area. He said “Cumbria is in line for between £25bn and £45bn of inward investment. In an area with a population of 500,000 people, that is extraordinary. Some 80,000 skilled jobs will be required. It's hugely important that we hold onto the talent we have and that we attract people to come, and this development will help us to do that.”

The new block on the other hand has already been home to 35 students since last Autumn, but not it is officially open it is looking to achieve full occupancy for the 2016-17 academic year.
