Winchester University Staff to Strike over Pay

Staff at Winchester University have coincided their strike over pay this Friday with an open day for potential students and their parents.

Members of the University and College Union (UCU) will be the first to strike with the aim to disrupt open days and graduations. More local branches are expected to announce their plans later this week after union members voted in favour to escalate their action last week.
According to the union the dispute has arisen due to a pay offer of 1.1% from the universities' employers, UCEA.

UCU have suggested that despite the offer universities could afford to pay more and that the latest deal did little to address the 14.5% real pay cut that its members have witnessed since 2009. Despite the offer of a little over 1%, vice-chancellors are set to enjoy a pay hike of 6.1%, which has further angered members.

In addition to the complaints over pay, the union has also called for universities to commit to reducing the proportion of staff on casual or zero hour contracts as well as closing the gender pay gap.
