Chichester Development Gets Narrowly Approved

Despite objections from residents, the development of a 134-bed student accommodation block in Fishbourne Road East, Chichester has been given the go-ahead.
The two purpose built student accommodation blocks had the support of the university but were only just granted permission. As a result, the attention has now turned to similar student housing developments, including the purpose-built 63-bed block on Terminus Road, as well as the 521 units planned for the former Portfield Depot.
It's argued that there remains an under-supply of purpose built housing for students with roughly 2.6 students for every one bed and it's hoped that the latest development will ease some of the pressure off housing and help manage and relieve affordable housing's availability for others.
The decision to allow the Fishbourne Road East development to go-ahead was triggered in part by data provided within the plan that indicated that student numbers had grown 14% between 2008-2011.
Due to the fact that the figures are already five years old, a Local Plan Review is scheduled to be adopted by 2019. This will include discussions surrounding student numbers and the need for more purpose-built student accommodation in relation to existing and future needs of the university and college.
