200-bed Halls Planned for University of Gloucestershire's Oxstalls Campus

Plans to develop a block of new student accommodation at the University of Gloucestershire's Oxstalls campus look likely to go-ahead.
The university is looking to build student housing with up to 200 bedrooms on the former Debenhams playing field off Estcourt Road.
Under the proposals, the development will consist of three blocks ranging from two to three storeys.
The student halls form part of the university's masterplan to transform the campus. In addition to the new student accommodation, the masterplan calls for a 12-court sports centre, cricket pavilion and two 250 seater grandstands.
To make way for the new student housing the dilapidated cricket pavilion will be demolished.
Concerns have been raised by the police in regards to the lack of car parking on the site. In particular, they argued if students decide to park in surrounding roads it could lead to an increase in vehicle crime.
In order to address the concerns, Gloucestershire Constabulary's crime prevention design advisors have given their support to developers in order to encourage security.
Planning documents submitted as part of the application said: "This site is partially bounded by residential properties along Estcourt Road and Estcourt Close. These neighbouring properties have been considered at every stage of the design proposal.
"The design team have explored appropriate solutions to meet the University's needs whilst enhancing the site for all stakeholders."
Gloucester City Council's head of planning has recommended the application is approved at the committee meeting scheduled for June 6.
