Shrewsbury University Scales Back Accommodation Plans

Plans to build student housing in Shrewsbury are to be resubmitted after it was decided demand was not strong enough to meet the proposed development.
The scheme, earmarked for the former tannery on Barker Street, was original for 217 student beds when it was first unveiled in August 2015. However, the development has been significantly scaled back, to just 120 rooms.
The council said the number of beds have been revised down after a detailed analysis of the anticipated demand revealed expected student numbers were lower than initially anticipated.
Shropshire Council is behind the project, which will be open to students attending University Centre Shrewsbury from the start of the 2018-19 academic term.
The new plans consist of two blocks of student accommodation along with three units of retail and office space in the second block. The scheme will also feature a connecting two-storey infill between the two blocks.
Commenting on the new proposals, Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council's cabinet member with responsibility for assets, said: "The construction of two blocks of accommodation, with an element of retail, provides a number of benefits. It'll enable us to continue to provide high-quality student living accommodation, and meet anticipated demand for retail in an area of the town centre deemed to be a redevelopment priority."
