More student housing looks to be coming to Shrewsbury after councillors approved plans to develop two historic sites in the town.
Dana Prison and Copthorne Barracks will be completely redeveloped after Shropshire Council's central planning committee gave the go ahead to the latest planning application.
The former prison will be developed into student housing, flats, office apace and possibly a restaurant.
The planning application faced stiff opposition, with initial plans being rejected over a lack of parking space and the impact it may have on nearby roads.
Commenting on the latest, approved application, councillor Alan Mosley, said: "Well it was expected because Trevor Osborne has addressed many of the very important issues that myself and local residents have been expressing since the original proposals went in. What we have got now is a far better set of proposals than went in as outline and we can now carry on discussions over the detail of the site."
Under the plans the gatehouse will be turned into a variety residential units. The A wing will become student accommodation with a maximum of 109 units, with wing C being transformed into 16 student rooms. Meanwhile, 16 apartments have been earmarked for wings B and D.
The prison kitchen will be developed into either retail space of a restaurant, while the education block will be demolished to make way for 30 residential apartments.
Plans to turn Copthorne Barracks into hundreds of homes were also approved, although finer details regarding the potential loss of the historic site still need to be agreed.
