Unite Confirms Sale of Huddersfield Schemes

Unite Students has confirmed the sale of its sites in Huddersfield to focus on what it describes as "high and mid-ranked universities."
The assets in Huddersfield consist of just under 1,000 bedrooms and form part of a £180.5m deal with the Asian media giant Singapore Press Holdings.
Commenting on the sale, Chief Executive of Unite Students Richard Smith, said the sale fits with the companyâÂÂs strategy to align with those universities with the highest student demand and the best long-term growth prospects.
Due to the disposal, Unite no longer has a presence in Huddersfield but comes at a time when other student schemes are on the horizon. The latest plans to be submitted include the redevelopment of the former Co-op building in New Street into student flats.
Meanwhile, senior Labour councillor Peter McBridge, a firm champion of regeneration in Kirkless, said there is a need for more student accommodation in the town.
Mr McBride, said: "I don't think that the bubble is going to burst. We've now got students coming from Leeds University to attend Huddersfield. That is the first step to what will be a major trend in the next 10 years."
