Council bosses in Salford have taken steps towards selling an area of land next to Peel Park with the goal of creating additional student accommodation.

Owned by the council, the property and regeneration committee have discussed details of plans to dispose of the land.

Town hall documents indicate the site has been identified in the Crescent Masterplan, which the council and University of Salford are joint partners in, as a development opportunity.

Salford University built its Peel Park Quarter accommodation in 2015 and are now looking to expand the campus.

City Mayor Paul Dennett said: "We did see that as a positive in terms of the development moving forward, actually accommodating students on campus rather than in the communities and neighbourhoods in and around the university."

According to officer John Nugent, the university had contacted the authority directly about the site, with plans to expand into it to 'improve its student accommodation offer going forward'.

A 'non-binding exclusivity agreement' has been entered into between the town hall and the university, to enable both parties to undertake 'due diligence' on the proposal and planning discussions.
