Planning Committee Due to Decide on Stoke Scheme

A new student accommodation development in Stoke-on-Trent will have its fate decided next week.

Situated on land in Registry Street, the proposed scheme was put forward by Curran & Sons.

Stoke-on-Trent's planning committee is due to decide on the project at a virtual meeting taking place on Wednesday 14th October. The scheme consists of 141 student flats split across a six-storey building, with the majority of the beds being provided in studios.

Documents submitted ahead of the meeting said: "The proposals represent an opportunity for further student accommodation resulting in the redevelopment of a brownfield site in a sustainable location. The location has good access to the university campus, as well as Stoke town centre, which has a recognised role as a university town."

"Whilst there are uncertainties regarding the overall demand for this type of accommodation, the application proposal does not conflict with adopted policies and there are no material considerations that suggest that the application should be refused."

"The proposals involve a large-scale building of up to six storeys in height."

"The development would be significantly taller than any other buildings within the immediate area and would clearly impact, in visual terms, on the surroundings. However the sites location and position, alongside the A500 and one of the key routes into Stoke town centre, represents the opportunity for a prominent gateway development."
