Former PBSA in Salford is going to be converted into affordable accommodation.

Bramall Court, a 15-storey tower of purpose-built student accommodation on Cannon Street is to be refurbished and turned into affordable accommodation.

Salford City Council has partnered with Mears to transform the site. Mears currently manage the site but will invest more than £2 million in refurbishing the block in return for the council entering into a lease agreement for the use of the completed accommodation.

The deal represents the first time the council has partnered with a housing provider and could lead to similar partnerships in the future.

Mears entered into talks with the council last year after a slump in demand from students. With more choice available in the student market, demand for Bramall Court has declined and it is no longer commercially viable as PBSA.

The works are due to start later this month, with the first 40 flats being made available before Christmas.
