The planning committee in Preston has given the go-ahead to allow new student accommodation to be let to non-students on a temporary basis.

Due to construction delays, the scheme is now due to open after September, at which point most students are likely to have already secured their accommodation for the next academic year.

Unable to take students at the start of the 2022-23 academic year, Ladson Preston Limited submitted an application to councillors to vary a condition which only allows those studying to occupy the residence.

The amendment to this condition will be in place until the end of August 2023 and has been agreed to ensure the scheme is not left lying empty.

The accommodation will now be open to anyone employed or due to be employed locally in a school or other education establishment, the police force, fire or ambulance services, social services, the armed forces and other industries the local authority agrees to be of critical importance to the area.
