Considered the most depressing day of the year, Blue Monday falls on the third Monday of every year. Blue Monday was born out of several depressing factors attributed to late January, including the poor weather, money struggles caused by debt from the holiday season, and lapsed New Year's Resolutions.

While the theory behind Blue Monday might be pseudo-scientific, it's undeniable that the period can be pretty depressing for students. It's dark, it's cold, and it's exam season.

So, how can you beat the Blue Monday blues?

Get outside

Combat the winter blues by getting outside and making the most of the natural light. The sun sets earlier in January, so try and get out earlier in the day to enjoy more of the sunlight. You could meet a friend outside, walk to your lectures, or take a stroll around campus. Enjoy the fresh air, soak up some Vitamin D, and let the sunlight be your ally against the January gloom.

Make a plan for the week ahead

Blue Monday is just that - a Monday. Take back control by setting time aside to create a to-do list and a plan for the week ahead. Knowing what lies ahead can provide a sense of structure and purpose, making it easier to navigate any challenges that may arise. You can also plan some treats and events to look forward to, which will help get your week off to a brighter start.

Get a SAD lamp

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects many during the winter months, contributing to feelings of lethargy and low mood. Investing in a SAD lamp, which mimics natural sunlight, can be a game-changer. Position the lamp near your workspace to motivate you while you study, or put it by your bed to start your day with a burst of light. This simple addition can significantly improve your mood and energy levels during the darker winter days.

Break your routine

Monotony can contribute to the January slump. Break free from your routine this Blue Monday by seeking new experiences and trying new things. Explore a new study spot, try a different workout routine, or immerse yourself in a hobby you've been meaning to pursue.

Reclaim Blue Monday this January

Blue Monday may cast a temporary shadow, but with proactive measures, you can claim back the winter months. If you're still struggling with your mental health, check out our blog on managing your anxiety at university.
