The Future of Durham University's Queen's Campus in Doubt

Home to 2,000 full-time students, Durham University's Queen's Campus has been educating students in Stockton since 1992. The purpose-built campus is home to several major academic facilities including John Snow College, Stephenson College, the Wolfson Research Institute and the School of Medicine, Pharmacy and Health.

However, The Queen's Campus Working Group (an in-house think tank at the university) has recommended that 'academic activities' on the site be moved into, or closer to, Durham.

The working group was created last year to review the future of Queen's Campus as the university looked to reassess its facilities going forward.

Durham University's vice-chancellor Professor Stuart Corbridge has confirmed the initial findings of the review, as well as the group's initial recommendations, stressing that their initial proposal of relocation will be debated by the University Council for months to come.

“The outcomes of the consultation process helped shape a well evidenced Report which contains initial proposals for further consideration through our governance process."

“These initial proposals centre on the potential substantial repurposing of Queen's Campus, further demonstrating the University's commitment to the educational role of the Campus, its staff and its contribution to the local economy of the Tees Valley. The proposals would also see the relocation of some core academic units to Durham City or its immediate vicinity."

“Decisions on these proposals will be made in the coming months by the University Council, the University's governing body.”
