Students have launched a petition calling for Cambridge University to preserve the tradition of class lists, which publish student results on boards outside the Senate House.

Only last week the university's governing council decided to approve the plan to get rid of class lists after a campaign was launched, arguing that the system was too upsetting for students who have underachieved.

The decision to remove the lists was supported by the students' union and around 1,200 current and former students, who signed a petition calling for it to be scrapped.

However, now a counter-petition has been launched calling for the decision to be rescinded and for a university-wide vote on the future of class lists.

The latest petition supports class lists, but with the option for undergraduates to opt-out of seeing their results made public.

The petition was put forward by a student of Churchill College, who accused the university of ignoring its students.

However, a recent meeting of the university council had deemed the current practice was unnecessary, suggesting that the public display of class lists is undesirable, unnecessary and no longer benefited the interest of the collegiate university or its various partners.
